July 28, 2020, Kathmandu,

The Supreme Court of Nepal today issued a show-cause notice to the Government of Nepal over the unfair taxation that discourages the operation of electric vehicles. The excise, tax for example, on battery cars has been raised to 40-60 percent, and there is an additional 60 percent customs duty. The Government of Nepal against the fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution of Nepal – 2015, and Environment Protection Act – 2076, imposed unfair and unreasonable taxation to electric vehicles, and electrical equipment, which also contradicts with the state policy. Responding to a writ filed by advocate Sashi Basnet, and other members on behalf of Justice and Rights Institue – Nepal, a single bench of Justice Dr. Ananda Mohan Bhattarai directed the defendants to provide clarification.
