Civil society (CSOs) of Nepal working in the field of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) submitted a memorandum to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). A delegation consists of fourteen CSOs and led by Justice and Rights Institute Nepal (JuRI Nepal), called on NHRC to take steps forward to promote human rights with special attention to the ESCR rights. The idea was first thought up during the ESCR Dialogue organized by JuRI-Nepal in partnership with IM Swedish Development Partner.
It was drafted and finalized following a series of consultations with the relevant CSOs. The chairperson of NHRC Hon Anup Raj Sharma welcomed the CSO’s joint crusade so as to advance NHRC’s role in promotion and protection of ESCR rights. A memorandum incorporating ten key concerns includes among others, “analysis and review of the draft Bills and amendment proposals on the matter pertaining to the ESCR rights whether or not they are in line with the Constitution of Nepal and other international covenants and conventions and offer concrete recommendations”. The chairperson at the end of meeting expressed his sincere thanks to the CSOs for the submission.
