31st July, 2025

JuRI-Nepal is engaging in policy advocacy focusing on legal and policy reforms. Currently a debate is ongoing on age of  marriage in Nepal. In collaboration and with the support from UNFPA, JuRI-Nepal is developing a policy brief on this issues. In this connection, JuRI-Nepal organized a stakeholders consultation meeting on the draft policy brief focusing on age of  marriage and its consequences in Kathmandu on 31st July 2025. The government officials, officials from national human rights institutions and CSOs representatives working in the field of human rights and gender justice contributed in the meeting. Mostly the participants insisted on not reducing the existing marriage age i.e. 20:20, which has been legally established considering the physical and psychological, socio-economic and human development impacts of marriage age and not criminalizing the child marriage in the ground of different rationales.
